How this guide was made: Research-based. Plan details come from Midjourney’s official plan comparison, Ideogram’s pricing page and Runway’s pricing page, checked as of Oct 2026. We haven’t run a blind image-quality test, so we describe what each tool is designed for rather than ranking output quality.
Quick picks
- Best for stylised visuals with a clear plan ladder: Midjourney
- Best for trying design graphics (thumbnails, posters, social cards) cheaply: Ideogram
- Best if you also need video: Runway
What to look for
For a solo creator, four things matter more than model names:
- Commercial use. Can you use the images in ads, products and client work?
- Privacy. Are your images public by default?
- Cost per usable image. Not just the monthly price, but how many generations you get.
- Text in images. Thumbnails and social cards often need words that are spelled correctly.
1. Midjourney: best for stylised images and fast iteration
Midjourney has four subscription tiers. Per its official plan comparison:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Fast GPU time | Relax mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $8 | 3.3 hr/month | — |
| Standard | $30 | $24 | 15 hr/month | Unlimited images |
| Pro | $60 | $48 | 30 hr/month | Unlimited images + SD video |
| Mega | $120 | $96 | 60 hr/month | Unlimited images + SD video |
Extra fast GPU time is $4/hour on all plans. Midjourney says annual plans give a 20% discount, paid up front.
Usage rights: all plans fall under Midjourney’s “General Commercial Terms”. Midjourney’s footnote says companies with more than $1,000,000 in gross annual revenue must buy Pro or Mega.
Privacy: Stealth Mode, which keeps images private, is only on Pro and Mega. On Basic and Standard, assume your images are visible to others.
Fit for: featured images, mood boards and illustrative visuals where style matters more than precise text. Watch out: Basic has no Relax mode, so once the 3.3 fast hours are gone you need to buy more time or upgrade.
2. Ideogram: best for design graphics on a budget
Ideogram is an image generator whose paid plans add private generation, batch generation and quality export. If your images need words in them (thumbnails, posters, social cards), use its free weekly credits to test how well it handles your text before paying.
Plans (as of Oct 2026):
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Priority credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | — | Weekly free credits for eligible accounts |
| Plus | $20/mo | $15/mo ($180/yr) | 2,400/mo |
| Pro | $60/mo | $42/mo ($504/yr) | 7,500/mo |
| Team | $30/user/mo | $20/user/mo | 3,600/user/mo (min. 2 users) |
All paid plans include unlimited slow credits. Priority credits generate instantly, and once they run out you fall back to a slow queue. Ideogram says AI editing features like “Editing with AI” and Image Reference need priority credits.
Usage rights: Ideogram says it doesn’t claim ownership of generated images, and you can use them for any purpose, including commercial use, subject to its terms.
Privacy: images are published by default. Plus and Pro subscribers can generate unpublished images and delete images.
Watch out: unused subscription priority credits expire each billing cycle. Ideogram says it doesn’t offer discounts or free trials on subscriptions, and payment is by card through Stripe (no PayPal).
3. Runway: best if you also need video
Runway puts images, video and some audio models in one credit pool, which is handy if you make both thumbnails and short clips.
Plans (as of Oct 2026): Standard $15/mo ($12/mo annual, 625 credits/month), Pro $35/mo ($28/mo annual, 2,250 credits), Max $95/mo ($76/mo annual, 9,500 credits). Free accounts get a one-time 125 credits.
Image costs, per Runway: Gen-4 Image at 1080p uses 8 credits per image, Gen-4 Image Turbo 2 credits, and Nano Banana Pro 2K 20 credits. Runway estimates that Standard’s 625 monthly credits equal about 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p.
Watch out: on Standard and Pro, monthly credits don’t roll over.

Rough cost comparison for a blogger
Say you publish 8 posts a month and want 2–3 images per post (about 20–25 final images, with several drafts each):
- Midjourney Basic ($10) may be enough if you’re efficient with fast hours. Standard ($30) removes the worry with unlimited Relax-mode images.
- Ideogram Plus ($20, or $15 annual) gives 2,400 priority credits plus unlimited slow generations.
- Runway Standard ($15, or $12 annual) covers about 78 Gen-4 1080p images, before any video use.
These are estimates from vendor figures, not measured usage.
Which should you choose?
| You need… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Artistic featured images | Midjourney Standard |
| Thumbnails and social cards (test text first) | Ideogram Plus |
| Images and short video clips | Runway Standard |
| Private generations on a budget | Ideogram Plus (Midjourney needs Pro) |
Good practice for AI images on a business site
- Don’t present AI images as real photos of products, people or events.
- Add alt text describing the image for accessibility and SEO; see best SEO tools for solopreneurs.
- Avoid trademarks and real people’s likenesses in prompts for commercial work.
- Keep a record of prompts and plan level in case you need to show your usage rights later.

FAQ
Can I use AI-generated images commercially? Midjourney lists General Commercial Terms on all plans, with a Pro or Mega requirement for companies over $1M in revenue. Ideogram says you’re free to use generated images commercially. Always read the current terms.
Which AI image generator is best for text in images? We haven’t run our own text-rendering test. Text accuracy varies by prompt and model, so test your real thumbnail or poster wording on Ideogram’s free credits or Runway’s one-time credits before you subscribe.
Is there a free AI image generator? Ideogram gives eligible free accounts weekly credits, and Runway gives a one-time 125 credits. Midjourney’s plan page lists no free tier.
Bottom line
Pick the tool that matches the image you actually make most: Midjourney for style, Ideogram for budget design graphics, Runway when images and video share a budget. Start on the cheapest plan, then upgrade only when credits or privacy become a real constraint.
