How this comparison was made: Research-based. Prices, plan names and policies come from semrush.com/prices and ahrefs.com/pricing, checked as of Oct 2026. We haven’t run a side-by-side data-accuracy test for this version, so we don’t claim either tool’s data is “more accurate”.
The short version
Both are mature SEO platforms, and either will do the job for a solo publisher. The difference is scope and entry price.
- Semrush is a broad marketing suite: SEO, AI-search visibility, local, content, social, advertising and PR, sold as separate toolkits.
- Ahrefs started as a backlink and keyword research tool and has been expanding into AI-search tracking (Brand Radar) and marketing features. Its entry plan is $10/month cheaper than Semrush’s on monthly billing.
If you only need classic SEO research for one or two sites, either entry plan works. Decide based on budget and on whether you’ll use the extra toolkits Semrush sells.
Pricing side by side (as of Oct 2026)
Semrush (SEO toolkit)
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | — |
| SEO | $139/mo | $117.33/mo |
| Starter (SEO + AI Search) | $199/mo | $165.17/mo |
| Pro+ (SEO + AI Search) | $299/mo | $248.17/mo |
| Advanced (SEO + AI Search) | $549/mo | $455.67/mo |
According to Semrush, the SEO plan covers 5 websites to monitor, 500 keywords tracked daily, basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit. Starter adds more keyword and competitor tools, MCP access and AI-visibility tracking (50 prompts daily). Pro+ raises limits to 15 websites and 1,500 keywords and adds historical data and content optimisation. Additional users start at $45/mo.
Ahrefs
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| Ahrefs Free | $0 |
| Lite | $129/mo |
| Standard | $249/mo |
| Advanced | $449/mo |
| Enterprise | $1,499/mo |
Ahrefs says paying annually saves up to 17%. Lite is described as “essential data for small businesses and personal projects”, and Standard as suited to freelance SEOs. Standard adds Content Explorer, Portfolios, Batch Analysis, SERP comparison and Brand Radar on top of Lite. Ahrefs also sells add-ons, such as Report Builder ($99/mo) and AI-prompt tracking packages.
Free options: try before you pay
This matters more than the feature list for a solo site.
- Semrush lists a Free plan at $0 for trying out the platform, with no credit card required.
- Ahrefs Free gives limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. Ahrefs says your account drops to this plan when a paid subscription ends.
For a site you own, either free option, plus Google Search Console, can show which pages and queries are working before you spend anything.
Refunds and cancellation
- Semrush: its FAQ says you can cancel, downgrade or upgrade at any time unless you have custom terms.
- Ahrefs: you can cancel any time and keep access to the end of the billing period, but Ahrefs says it “does not issue refunds in general”. For monthly plans you can request a refund if you haven’t used the service, but it may decline the request if there’s material activity.
So test Ahrefs on its free plan before upgrading, and plan to subscribe for a full month when you do.
When Semrush makes more sense
- You want AI-search visibility tracking and classic SEO in one subscription (Starter and up).
- You run ads, local listings or social and would use Semrush’s other toolkits.
- You want to track more keywords across several sites on a mid-tier plan.
When Ahrefs makes more sense
- Your work is mainly keyword research, competitor analysis and backlinks.
- You want the lower entry price on monthly billing ($129 vs $139).
- You value a focused interface with fewer modules to learn.
A cheaper path for new sites
If you’re just starting out, you probably don’t need either subscription every month.
- Use Google Search Console and a free tier from day one.
- Write your first 15–30 posts. Our blog setup guide and best AI writing tools for bloggers cover that stage.
- Subscribe for one month when you have a batch of content to plan or a site to audit. Export what you need.
- Cancel if you don’t need ongoing tracking. Resubscribe a quarter later.

Bottom line
Neither tool is a must-have on day one. When you’re ready to pay, Ahrefs Lite is the cheaper focused option, and Semrush is the broader suite that’s easier to justify if you use more than SEO. Try both free tiers on your own site, then subscribe to one for a month and see whether it changes what you publish.
