A research-based ElevenLabs review: plans, credits per real project, voice cloning, commercial use and alternatives, checked against ElevenLabs' official pages.

How this review was made: This review is research-based. It’s built from ElevenLabs’ official pricing, product and affiliate pages, checked on 14 October 2026. We haven’t published hands-on audio tests in this version. Claims that need in-product checking are left out. We’ll add our own audio samples and usage logs in a future update.
Verdict
Who it’s for: solo creators who want script-to-voice narration, voice cloning, or dubbing, with a commercial license, on a small budget. Who should skip it: people who mostly edit their own recordings (Descript is built for that), or anyone who wants simple per-minute billing.
On paper, ElevenLabs offers the cheapest route to a commercial license we found among the major voice tools. Starter costs $6/month and includes instant voice cloning. The main thing to watch is the credit system.
What ElevenLabs is
ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform. Its site splits the business into three product lines:
- ElevenCreative: text to speech, voice cloning, Studio for long-form projects, dubbing, sound effects, music, plus image and video features.
- ElevenAgents: conversational voice agents.
- ElevenAPI: developer access to the models.
Most solopreneurs will only need ElevenCreative.
How we assessed it
For this version, we:
- Read the official pricing page and plan comparison (14 Oct 2026).
- Used the published credit rates to estimate what common creator projects would cost (formulas shown below).
- Read the affiliate page to see how ElevenLabs describes its own products.
We have not yet scored voice quality by ear, so there’s no star rating here.
Voice quality: Eleven v4 and earlier models
The ElevenLabs site banner announces Eleven v4 as “our most emotive model yet”. The plan comparison also lists the Eleven v3 model across plans. We can’t independently judge how v4 sounds compared with earlier models until we’ve done listening tests. We haven’t confirmed which plans include v4 or its credit cost.
Voice cloning: instant vs professional
According to the pricing page:
- Instant Voice Cloning: from Starter ($6/month). It makes a clone from a short sample.
- Professional Voice Cloning: from Creator ($22/month). Pro includes 1 professional clone, Scale 3 and Business 10, per the plan comparison.
Only clone your own voice or a voice you have clear, documented consent to use.
Studio, dubbing and localization
- Studio: Free includes 3 projects; Starter includes 20 projects.
- Dubbing Studio: included from Starter.
- Dubbing credit costs (pricing FAQ): automatic dubbing is about 2,000 credits/minute with a watermark and 3,000 without. Dubbing Studio is about 5,000 with a watermark and 10,000 without.
- Languages: the plan comparison lists 74 languages for text to speech. The affiliate page uses broader marketing wording about localization.
Pricing and credits: what a real project costs
Plans as listed on elevenlabs.io/pricing on 14 Oct 2026 (monthly billing, USD, excluding taxes):
| Plan | Monthly price | Credits/month | Commercial license | Cloning | Approx. TTS minutes (vendor table) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | No | None | ~10 |
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 | Yes | Instant | ~30 |
| Creator | $22 ($11 first month at time of check) | 121,000 | Yes | Instant + Professional | ~121 |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | Yes | Instant + Professional | ~600 |
| Scale | $299 (3 seats) | 1,800,000 | Yes | + 3 Professional clones | ~1,800 |
| Business | $990 (10 seats) | 6,000,000 | Yes | + 10 Professional clones | ~6,000 |
Annual billing is priced at 10× the monthly price, so you get two months free. That works out to $5/month for Starter and $18.33 for Creator.
Our credit math. The formula is: credits needed ≈ characters in your script × credits per character. The vendor table implies about 1,000 credits per minute of TTS, and multilingual v2 models use 1 credit per character.
- 10-minute YouTube narration: about 10,000 credits. That’s a third of Starter’s monthly allowance, or one video a month on Free (which has no commercial license).
- 5-episode podcast, 3-minute AI intro/outro each: 5 × 3 × 1,000 ≈ 15,000 credits. That fits in Starter.
- Short course, 60 minutes of narration: about 60,000 credits. That’s more than Starter, so you’d need Creator (121k).
These are estimates. Real usage depends on the model, regenerations, and punctuation in your script. Credits roll over for up to two months on active paid plans, with a cap of 3× your monthly quota.
Commercial use and licensing
- The commercial license is included from Starter. It isn’t on the Free plan.
- Starter also adds commercial use for music.
- Prices exclude taxes.
- If you cancel or downgrade, the account drops to Free at the end of the billing cycle and unused paid credits expire.
